Description
This dish is actually very hearty, so it pairs well with a light vegetable side. In addition to mackerel, you can also use hake, but it is milder in flavor.
Ingredients
- Mackerel - 2 pieces
- Puff Pastry - 8.8 oz
- Carrot - 1 piece
- Onion - 1 piece
- Butter - 1.1 oz
- Meyer Lemon Juice - to taste
- Salt - to taste
- Ground Black Pepper - to taste
- Toasted Sesame - to taste
Step by Step guide
Step 1
First, take two small mackerels, clean them from the insides, cut off the heads, and carefully remove the backbone by making a cut along its length (if there are any small bones left, remove them).
Step 2
Peel the onion and carrot. Cut the onion in half and finely chop it. Grate the carrot on a coarse grater. Sauté the ingredients in butter until soft, then season with salt and pepper.
Step 3
Take the thawed puff pastry, place it on a floured surface, and divide it into two rectangles (the size depends on the size of the fish). Place the fish in the center of the rectangle and make cuts on both sides of the puff pastry from the fish fillet to the edges of the rectangle. The distance from the fish to the edges of the pastry should be approximately 5 cm. The cuts should not be even, but rather resemble the hands of a clock pointing at 4. Then, drizzle the fish with lemon juice, season with salt, and fill it with the sautéed onion and carrot mixture. Next, braid the puff pastry, starting from the top, alternating between the right and left strips (if some fish is visible, that's okay). Continue this until you reach the tail. Form the tail, which can be trimmed with a knife for aesthetics.
Step 4
Sprinkle everything with sesame seeds and place it in a preheated oven at 356°F for 30 minutes. For the last 5 minutes, you can turn on the grill function and increase the temperature to 392°F.
