Description

Fish Pie by Nigella Lawson

Ingredients

  • Salad Potatoes - 3 lbs
  • Butter - 5.3 oz
  • Fish - 26.5 oz
  • Smoked haddock fillet - 2 lbs
  • Skim Milk - 17 fl oz
  • Bay leaf - 3 pieces
  • White Pepper (whole) - 2 teaspoons
  • Frozen green bean pods - 4.4 oz
  • Wheat Flour - 2.6 oz
  • Farm fresh eggs - 3 pieces
  • Cheshire Cheese - 4.4 oz

Step by Step guide

Step 1

Before starting to cook, grate the cheese and hard-boil the eggs.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and boil them in salted water. Once the potatoes are cooked, drain the water and mash them with 75 grams of butter. You can add seasonings to taste.

Step 3

Pour the milk into a pot, add the fish, bay leaves, and peppercorns. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer the fish. Transfer the fish to a plate, and pour the milk into a separate container, discarding the bay leaves and peppercorns.

Step 4

While the fish is cooking, pour boiling water over the frozen peas. Preheat the oven to 374°F.

Step 5

Melt the remaining 75 grams of butter in a saucepan and mix with the flour to make a roux for the sauce.

Step 6

Gradually pour the remaining fish milk into the butter and flour mixture. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens. Sprinkle most of the grated cheese (reserve some for topping the pie) and the peas.

Step 7

Transfer the fish to a heatproof dish (3 liters), pour most of the sauce over the top (use a spatula to spread it evenly). Cut the eggs into pieces and place them on top of the fish. Then spread the mashed potatoes and smooth it out. Sprinkle with grated cheese and place in the oven (preheated to 374°F). Bake for 20–40 minutes (depending on the oven).
