Description

The main focus here is the use of mayonnaise; it should be present everywhere but simultaneously nowhere. This is not a mayonnaise salad, but a salad that features mayonnaise. Jokes have been made about Herring Under a Fur Coat, yet people continued to eat it regardless. The classic Soviet recipe called for fatty lightly salted herring, which is hard to find today. Therefore, you can use regular barrel herring or salt fresh herring yourself.

- Potato - 20 oz
- Carrot - 20 oz
- Beetroot - 20 oz
- Apple - 2 pieces
- Herring - 20 oz
- Chicken Egg - 4 pieces
- Mayonnaise - 5 oz
- Salt - to taste
- Ground Black Pepper - to taste
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Peel half a kilogram of potatoes and half a kilogram of carrots, then boil them in salted water until tender. Cool and cut into neat small cubes.
Step 2
Boil the beets until tender, or use pre-cooked beets available in stores; grate the beets using a medium grater.
Step 3
Peel two large apples, remove the seeds and any other core parts, and cut them into small, even cubes.
Step 4
Remove any bones from the herring fillet, if they remain after processing, and cut it into small, neat cubes.
Step 5
Boil four large eggs hard, cool them, and then grate them using a medium grater, after removing the shells.
Step 6
Mix all components separately with a small amount of mayonnaise, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 7
Layer the ingredients starting with potatoes mixed with mayonnaise, followed by carrots with mayonnaise, then apples with mayonnaise, then eggs with mayonnaise, then herring, and finally beets with mayonnaise. Let it rest in the refrigerator for an hour before serving, garnished with chopped green onions.
