Description

The meat can be stewed without a slow cooker in any pot with a thick bottom and a lid. However, this method may take longer. It is essential to stew the meat until it falls off the bones and shreds easily (this can be done in a slow cooker, in the oven, or in a heavy cast-iron pot). You can also use bacon or, for example, boiled chicken. To add a smoky flavor, it's best to fry the bacon and chop it finely. This way, the meat will blend with the lentils into a hearty stew that is even better eaten with a spoon rather than a fork. For a textural contrast, you can top each bowl with crispy battered onion rings for some crunch.
