Description
The foundation of Lithuanian cuisine is potatoes and bacon, and one of the dishes made from them is kugelis. Kugelis is enjoyed both with sour cream, which pairs well with potatoes, and with apple sauce or cranberry jam, which complement the bacon nicely. It is very simple to prepare—just mix all the ingredients together—but it will take time and some company to peel and grate two kilograms of potatoes.
Ingredients
- Bacon - 14.1 oz
- Onion - 8.8 oz
- Potato - 4 lbs
- Chicken Egg - 6 pieces
- Condensed Milk - 1 can
- Salt - to taste
- Ground Black Pepper - to taste
Step by Step guide
Step 1
In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon until it renders its fat, then add the finely chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine the eggs, condensed milk, salt, and pepper.
Step 3
Grate the peeled potatoes, using a food processor if desired. Add the potatoes to the milk and egg mixture, then incorporate the bacon and onion, and mix well.
Step 4
Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and place it in an oven preheated to 356°F for one and a half hours. Serve the finished kugelis as a side dish with meat or as a main course, garnished with sour cream.
