I don't recommend skimping on the bacon: you should use truly dry-cured bacon, sliced thinly, and it should be reasonably salty so that it can season the tomatoes. Also, let the tomatoes cool for 2 minutes before eating; otherwise, there is a risk of burning your mouth with the tomato juice.
