Baked Onion Soup with a Ukrainian Twist
Ingredients
- Onion - 14.1 oz
- Butter - 3.5 oz
- Ground Black Pepper - to taste
- Basil - 0.4 oz
- Salt - to taste
- Semi-soft cream cheese - 3.5 oz
- Pork fat - 2 pieces
- Mineral water - 1 qt
- White bread - 2 pieces
- Bay leaf - 3 pieces
- Cheese Spread - to taste
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Place the butter in a pot and melt it over low heat. Meanwhile, slice all the onions into half-rings and add them to the butter. Sauté for about 15 minutes until the onions are soft.
Step 2
Pour in 1 liter of boiling water and over low heat, add the cream cheese, bay leaves, salt, pepper, and basil. Cook for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat.
Step 3
Remove only the onions and sauté them in a pan until they turn slightly golden. Then return everything back to the soup.
Step 4
Sauté a couple of slices of pork fat until they become translucent and form a crust.
Step 5
Pour the soup into pots, place a piece of pork fat on top, and sprinkle with cheese if desired.
Step 6
Place everything in a preheated oven at 356°F and bake for about 10 minutes.
Step 7
In the pan where you sautéed the fat, add a couple of pieces of bread and make croutons.
Step 8
Finally, when you take the soup out of the oven, you can add a little greenery to taste.
