Homemade Pickled Herring
Ingredients
- Onion - 2 pieces
- Water - 17 fl oz
- Salt - 2 tablespoons
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Red Long Chili Peppers - 1 teaspoon
- Ground Black Pepper - 1 teaspoon
- Safflower Oil - 1 tablespoon
- Vinegar essence - 1 fl oz
- Passata Tomato Sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Herring - 2 pieces
Step by Step guide
Step 1
For the marinade, boil the water and add salt, sugar, pepper, oil, and tomato paste. Let it cool and add vinegar. Instead of ground black pepper, you can add whole peppercorns, and you can also add bay leaves and other spices.
Step 2
Slice the onion into half rings and place half of it at the bottom of the container.
Step 3
Gut the herring and cut it into pieces (heads are not used), and place it on top of the onion.
Step 4
Add the remaining onion.
Step 5
Pour the marinade over and place in the refrigerator for 6–8 hours.
Step 6
Serve on a plate.
