Description
The perfect Mediterranean fast food that fits seamlessly into American culinary culture. The meatballs (again enhanced with cinnamon) pair wonderfully with onions, tomatoes, and olives. The pita will turn out juicy, but if you want a sauce, Greek tzatziki or Italian pesto are the best choices.
Ingredients
- Lean Beef - 17.6 oz
- Breadcrumbs - 2 spoons
- Whole egg - 1 piece
- Salt - to taste
- Ground Black Pepper - to taste
- Olive Oil - 3 spoons
- Pita - 4 pieces
- Cucumbers - 5.3 oz
- Spanish onions - ¼ heads
- Olives stuffed with lemon - 1.8 oz
- Parsley - 2 sprigs
- Cinnamon - to taste
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Prepare all the ingredients.
Step 2
Combine the minced meat with the breadcrumbs. Season with salt and pepper, add cinnamon and the egg yolk. Mix thoroughly.
Step 3
Knead the minced meat and shape it into small balls.
Step 4
In olive oil, sauté the meatballs until they develop a caramelized crust. Cover with a lid and let them cook for about 5 minutes.
Step 5
Place the meatballs on a paper towel to drain excess fat.
Step 6
Slice the pita bread lengthwise and place it on a dry, hot skillet, keeping it there until a golden crust forms. You can achieve the same result using a grill.
Step 7
Peel the red onion and slice it into thin half-moons.
Step 8
Slice the cucumber into thin half-moons.
Step 9
Slice the olives lengthwise and remove the pits, if present. Finely chop the parsley.
Step 10
Mix together the onion, cucumber, and olives. Add olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Step 11
Place a few meatballs in the pita.
Step 12
Place the vegetables on top.
Step 13
Serve immediately, adding any sauce you like — mayonnaise, pesto, or tzatziki.
