Description

This is a national appetizer in which we have slightly adapted the ingredients to make them more accessible and familiar in the United States. Instead of tomatillo — a type of green ground cherry commonly found in Mexico — we use gooseberries and the familiar ground cherries that can be found in grocery stores. If you are making the salsa in summer, use fresh gooseberries; if it's during the other seasons, feel free to substitute them with frozen ones. You can enjoy the salsa on its own by dipping corn tortilla chips or various crackers into it. It can also be served alongside hot dishes, such as white fish or beef steak — it refreshes the palate beautifully. Recipe by John Smith, chef at a local American bistro.
