- Rice - 1 cup

Step 1
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2
Place the rice in a pot and cover it with cold water. The water-to-rice ratio varies depending on the type of rice. Long-grain rice requires 1–1.5 parts water, while Italian Arborio rice requires 3 parts water.
Step 3
Put the pot on high heat and bring the rice to a boil, stirring occasionally. Once the rice boils, reduce the heat to low, add the butter, and cover with a lid for 20 minutes. The lid should not have a steam vent. To prevent steam from escaping through the gap between the lid and the pot, you can wrap the lid with a clean towel.
Step 4
After 20 minutes, remove the pot from the heat and place it on a damp towel. Open the lid, fluff the rice with a fork, cover again, and let it rest for about 10 minutes.
