Traditional French Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • Butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Spanish onions - 12 heads
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Ground Black Pepper - ½ teaspoon
  • Yellow Cherry Tomatoes - 2 pieces
  • Ground Caraway - 4 stems
  • Campbell's Beef Broth - 8 cups
  • Bay leaf - 1 piece

Step by Step guide

Step 1

In a pot, melt the butter, add very finely sliced onions, sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper, and mix well. Reduce the heat to low and cook the onions until they turn brown (this will take 20-40 minutes).

Step 2

Remove the seeds from the tomatoes and cut them into small pieces. Add to the onions and mix. Pour in the broth and add the caraway, bay leaf, and cook for 1 hour. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste, ladle into serving bowls, and serve with Gruyère croutons.
