Description
Baguettes are long, narrow loaves of French bread that are known for their crispy crust and soft interior. They are perfect for sandwiches, served alongside soups, or enjoyed with butter and jam. To make baguettes, you will need simple ingredients such as flour, water, yeast, and salt. With a bit of practice, you can master the art of baking these classic breads at home.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour - 17.6 oz
- Water - 12 fl oz
- Salt - to taste
- Dry yeast - 0.4 oz
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Rub the yeast into the flour until a uniform crumb forms. Add salt, then water. Knead the dough for 2 to 3 minutes until it starts to come together into a ball. Leave it to rest for 1 hour.
Step 2
Line the baking tray with a lightly floured towel.
Step 3
Place the dough on a floured work surface. Divide the dough into 4 pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Let them rest for 5 minutes.
Step 4
On a floured surface, shape the baguettes: flatten the balls into uneven ovals. Fold one of the long sides of the oval towards the center, press down, and seal with your thumb. Also fold the bottom side. Then, fold the dough in half lengthwise and seal the edges – it should resemble a log. Gently roll the baguette to shape it properly and stretch it.
Step 5
Place the baguettes on a baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let them rest for 1 hour.
Step 6
Make 5 to 6 shallow cuts with a sharp knife.
Step 7
Preheat the oven to 482°F, then reduce to 428°F and spray the oven walls with water. Bake the baguettes for 10 to 12 minutes.
