Description
Basbousa – Arab Sweet
Ingredients
- Semolina - 2 cups
- Wheat Flour - 1 cup
- Yogurt - 20 oz
- Eggs - 4 pieces
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Butter - 5 oz
- Honey - 4 tablespoons
- Orange zest - 5 oz
- Orange Juice - 1 cup
- Baking Powder - 1½ teaspoons
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Coconut flakes - 0 oz
- Salt - a pinch
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Beat the eggs with sugar and vanilla using a fork, then add yogurt and melted butter.
Step 2
Stir in the flour mixed with semolina, salt, and baking powder until smooth.
Step 3
Grease a baking dish with butter or line it with parchment paper, pour the 'raw' batter in, and place it in a preheated oven at 355°F for 30 minutes. Note that if using individual baking dishes, the cooking time may vary from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the thickness of the cake. The cake is ready when it turns golden brown.
Step 4
Five minutes before it's done, prepare the syrup. Mix honey with orange zest and orange juice; heat on the stove (do not boil).
Step 5
Remove the finished cake from the dish, cut it into squares, and pour the syrup over it; then sprinkle with coconut flakes.
