Gata (Armenian Vanilla Sweet with Walnuts)
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour - 6 glasses
- Sour Cream - 14.1 oz
- Margarine - 7.1 oz
- Vanillin - to taste
- Sugar - 2 glasses
- Activated Baking Soda - 1 tablespoon
- Butter - 7.1 oz
- Walnuts - to taste
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Divide the flour into two parts. One will go into the dough, and the other will be used for the filling.
Step 2
Grate the butter using a coarse grater and mix it with the flour. Create a well in the center and add sour cream, baking soda, and vanilla. The dough should be soft and not stick to your hands. Add more flour if necessary. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
Step 3
For the filling, mix together sugar, butter, vanilla, and walnuts until you achieve a smooth consistency. Sometimes I substitute part of the sugar with honey.
Step 4
Divide the dough into 4 parts. Roll one part into a rectangle about 3 mm thick. Evenly spread 1/4 of the filling over it, also at a thickness of 3 mm. Roll it up into a log. Brush with egg yolk, cut into rectangular or triangular pieces, and place in a preheated oven (356°F). Bake until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining dough.
