Description

Indian Bread (Poori) is a popular unleavened bread that is deep-fried until it puffs up and turns golden brown. It is typically served with various curries or as part of a traditional Indian meal. This delightful bread is beloved for its crispy texture and is often enjoyed during festive occasions or family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Coarsely Ground Rye Flour - 15.9 oz
  • Safflower Oil - to taste

Step by Step guide

Step 1

In a large bowl, mix flour, 1 tablespoon of oil, and 300 ml of water. Knead the dough.

Step 2

Place the dough on a floured surface, press it down by flattening and gently stretching it, then fold the right and left edges towards the center. Continue this process, kneading the dough and turning it in a circular motion for a few minutes.

Step 3

Using a knife, cut the dough into 4 pieces, then divide each quarter into 6 parts to make 24 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball. Dust your work surface with flour and use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into a circle about 10 cm in diameter.

Step 4

Line 3 baking sheets with paper towels.

Step 5

Pour 2 cm of oil into a skillet and heat for 5 minutes (to check if the oil is ready, drop in a cube of bread; it should brown in about 15 seconds). Add 2-3 pieces of dough to the oil and fry for a few minutes, until the pieces puff up and turn golden brown. Transfer to a baking sheet. Repeat the same process with the remaining dough. Serve slightly warm.
