Description
"Savory" pies — keitinpiiroa. In the past, this was a traditional ceremonial dish of the Karelians. Such pies were fried when the matchmakers came to the house. The "savory" pies were served to the son-in-law when he visited his mother-in-law, hence the other name — "pies for the son-in-law." Pies for the son-in-law were also served to builders when the log cabin was ready. In some Karelian villages, they were baked from flour of the new harvest after the last sheaf was harvested.
Ingredients
- Chicken Egg - 1 piece
- Sour Cream - 2 tablespoons
- Milk 3.5% - 1 fl oz
- Butter - 1 tablespoon
- Vegetable Oil - 1 fl oz
- Wheat Flour - 2 cups
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Prepare the dough. Whisk the egg, add sour cream, milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and a pinch of salt. You can add a little butter, but don't overdo it; otherwise, the pies won't be crispy.
Step 2
Knead a thick dough.
Step 3
Let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
Step 4
Roll the dough into a log and cut it into equal pieces.
Step 5
Roll out thin circles, dust with flour to prevent sticking.
Step 6
Sprinkle half of each circle with sugar, fold in half. Pinch the edges.
Step 7
Fry the pies in a well-heated skillet with vegetable oil on both sides until golden brown. This amount of ingredients makes about 18-20 pies.
