Description

Pita is a flat, unleavened bread that is extremely popular along the Mediterranean coast and in Middle Eastern countries. Its main feature is the steam that forms in the dough during cooking, which collects in a pocket in the center of the bread, separating the layers of dough. This creates a characteristic pocket within the bread that is typical of this dish.

Ingredients

  • Wheat Flour - 14.1 oz
  • Salt - ½ spoons
  • Olive Oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Dry yeast - 0.2 oz
  • Water - 8 fl oz

Step by Step guide

Step 1

Mix the yeast, flour, and salt, then add the oil and warm water. Knead the mixture by hand until a soft dough forms.

Step 2

Transfer the dough to a floured board and knead for another 5 minutes. Place it in a bowl, cover with oiled plastic wrap, and leave it in a warm place for 1.5 hours (the dough should nearly double in size during this time).

Step 3

Then place the dough on a floured surface. Knead for a few minutes and divide it into 8 pieces.

Step 4

Roll each piece into a ball. Then, flatten each ball into an oval-shaped disk about 6 mm thick and place them on a baking sheet, spaced well apart. Cover with towels and let rest for 15 minutes.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 392°F. Remove the towels and bake the flatbreads for 6–8 minutes, until they puff up. Serve warm.

Step 6

If done correctly, slicing the bread along the edge will create a hollow pocket inside that can be filled with any filling.
