Description
Quick Homemade Baklava
Ingredients
- Phyllo Dough - 2 lbs
- Honey - 8.8 oz
- Water - 8 fl oz
- Meyer Lemon Juice - 1 tablespoon
- Oranges - 1 piece
- Cardamom - 5 pieces
- Butter - 7.1 oz
- Sugar - 3.5 oz
- Pistachios - 3.2 oz
- Walnuts - 10.6 oz
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Prepare all the ingredients. Take the phyllo dough out of the freezer.
Step 2
Zest the orange, being careful not to touch the white pith.
Step 3
In a saucepan, combine water, honey, cardamom seeds, orange zest, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Step 4
Reduce the heat to a low simmer. Stirring occasionally, cook the syrup for 5 minutes. Once the syrup has completely cooled, strain it.
Step 5
In a blender, grind the walnuts and sugar.
Step 6
Chop the pistachios separately.
Step 7
Melt the butter. Generously grease the baking tray, set aside the remaining butter for later use.
Step 8
Place a stack of 20 sheets of phyllo dough on a baking tray. If the sheets do not fit, trim them. Add another 5–10 sheets of phyllo from a different package on top of the first stack.
Step 9
Spread the chopped walnuts evenly over the surface of the phyllo in a single layer.
Step 10
Place the remaining sheets of phyllo over the nuts.
Step 11
Cut the baklava into diamond shapes. Make 5 cuts along the length and 9 diagonal cuts, holding the layers in place.
Step 12
Evenly drizzle the remaining melted butter over the baklava. Allow the butter to settle for about 5 minutes.
Step 13
Bake until golden brown for about 50–60 minutes at 356°F. Halfway through baking, turn the baking tray over to ensure the baklava browns evenly.
Step 14
Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately drizzle it with sugar syrup.
Step 15
Sprinkle with chopped pistachios. Before serving, allow to cool at room temperature for a few hours.
