Description
Baking in a cast iron skillet is a tradition in the southern United States. The skillet allows for a better crust than baking in a regular pan. You can also use a regular baking dish or opt for a muffin tin lined with paper liners. This portioned presentation looks beautiful on the table and is convenient for guests.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour - ¾ cup
- Coarse Cornmeal - 1¼ cups
- Sugar - 2.1 oz
- Salt - ¾ teaspoon
- Farm fresh eggs - 2 pieces
- Milk - 1 cup
- Butter - 2.1 oz
- Baking Powder - 4 teaspoons
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 401°F. Place the cast iron skillet in the oven to heat.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and cornmeal with sugar, salt, and baking powder. People in the southern United States love sweet cornbread. You can reduce the sugar to 1 tablespoon.
Step 3
Add lightly beaten eggs, milk, and melted butter (it should not be hot!) to the flour mixture. Mix gently by hand or with a mixer on low speed until all ingredients are combined, but do not whisk.
Step 4
Grease the heated cast iron skillet with vegetable oil or butter. Pour in the batter and place it in the oven for 30–40 minutes.
