Swedish Bread
Ingredients
- Water - 2 cups
- Dry yeast - 1.5 oz
- Saffron - a pinch
- Butter - 7.1 oz
- Wheat Flour - 31.7 oz
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - ½ cup
- Light Raisins, Seedless - 3.4 oz
- Chicken Egg - 1 piece
Step by Step guide
Step 1
In a small container, pour warm water and add the yeast. Stir until dissolved and add the saffron, mixing again. Add the softened butter. In another bowl, mix the flour and salt, then add the sugar and raisins.
Step 2
Pour the yeast mixture into the flour and knead well. Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes. Transfer back to the bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rest for 1.5 hours at room temperature.
Step 3
Lightly sprinkle the dough with flour and divide it into 22 pieces. Roll each piece into a sausage shape and fold the ends inward to resemble a figure eight, bending the ends in different directions. Insert 1 raisin into each circle and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a towel and let rise for 30 minutes.
Step 4
Preheat the oven to 356°F. Brush the top of the bread with lightly beaten egg and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Cool on the baking sheet. Serve plain or spread with cold butter.
