Description
You can pour the syrup over the baklava directly on the baking sheet (if it is packed tightly) or transfer it to another container to achieve a denser arrangement.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour - 17.6 oz
- Chicken Egg - 1 piece
- Milk - 8 fl oz
- Salt - a pinch
- Butter - 8.8 oz
- Walnuts - 10.6 oz
- Powdered Sugar - 10.6 oz
- Cinnamon - ½ teaspoon
- Sugar - 8 fl oz
- Water - 8 fl oz
- Honey - 1 tablespoon
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Sift the required amount of flour into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt and mix. Make a well in the center of the flour mound and add all the liquid components of the dough: warm milk, egg, and melted butter (50 g).
Step 2
Using a fork, gradually incorporate the flour from the edges of the well into the center to start kneading the dough. You need to ensure that all the measured flour is incorporated and that the dough is soft, elastic, and not sticky. If you feel that the dough is too dry and cannot absorb all the flour, add warm milk in small portions.
Step 3
Transfer the kneaded dough to a floured board and knead thoroughly for 7 to 10 minutes until it no longer sticks to your hands and the board. Place the kneaded dough in a bag and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
Step 4
For the filling, you will need to chop the walnuts into pieces. Mix the chopped walnuts with powdered sugar and cinnamon.
Step 5
Divide the rested dough into pieces the size of a ping pong ball (23 pieces).
Step 6
Cover the divided dough with a towel to prevent it from drying out. Take one piece and roll it out as thinly as possible into a circle. Brush the rolled-out dough with very softened butter. Sprinkle the filling over the dough.
Step 7
Using a thin stick (like a chopstick), roll the dough into a log. Gather the rolled dough into an accordion shape, remove it from the stick, and tuck the ends inside. Repeat the same process with the remaining dough, rolling it out, sprinkling with filling, and rolling it up. Place the prepared pieces of baklava on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover them with a towel to prevent drying.
Step 8
Once all the pieces are ready, brush them with an egg yolk beaten with a tablespoon of water and place them in a preheated oven at 200°C for 10–15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160–170°C, remove the baking sheet, generously brush the baklava with melted butter, return the baking sheet to the oven, and bake for about 50–60 minutes until fully golden brown.
Step 9
Meanwhile, prepare the sugar syrup. For the sugar syrup, add the required amount of sugar and a tablespoon of honey to hot water and heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for about 15 minutes.
Step 10
Pour the hot baklava with the sugar syrup and let it sit at room temperature for 5–6 hours, covering it with plastic wrap.
