Description
Şekerpare is a traditional Turkish 'wet' cookie (soaked in syrup after baking) that is considered dietary in its historical homeland.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour - 3 cups
- Powdered Sugar - 2.6 oz
- Butter - 4.4 oz
- Semolina - 1.2 oz
- Egg white - 1 piece
- Baking Powder - 0.4 oz
- Vanillin - 0.1 oz
- Hazelnut - 3.5 oz
- Safflower Oil - 1 tablespoon
- Sugar - 3 cups
- Water - 3 cups
- Meyer Lemon Juice - 2 tablespoons
Step by Step guide
Step 1
Pour 2 cups of flour into a deep bowl, make a well in the center, and add the egg, melted butter, semolina, powdered sugar, vanillin, and baking powder. Mix everything in the center first, then gradually incorporate more flour. You should end up with a very soft dough ('as soft as an earlobe' is mentioned in Turkic literature), but it should not stick to your hands.
Step 2
Pinch off pieces of the dough about the size of half a tennis ball, roll them into balls, and place them on a pre-greased baking sheet. Press a hazelnut into each dough ball.
Step 3
Preheat the oven to 170°C (340°F) and bake the balls until golden brown.
Step 4
We recommend preparing the syrup while the şekerpare are in the oven. Combine sugar and water and bring to a boil. Keep the mixture boiling for three minutes, then add lemon juice and boil for another minute before removing from heat.
Step 5
Pour the hot syrup over the hot şekerpare taken out of the oven and serve after at least 20 minutes to allow the syrup to soak in.
